International Maritime Bureau (IMB)

The International Maritime Bureau is a specialized department of the International Chamber of Commerce. The IMB’s responsibilities lie in fighting crimes related to maritime trade and transportation, particularly piracy and commercial fraud, and in protecting the crews of ocean-going vessels. It publishes a weekly piracy report and maintains a 24-hour piracy reporting centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

IMB’s main task is to protect the integrity of international trade by seeking out fraud and malpractice. For over 25 years, it has used industry knowledge, experience and access to a large number of well-placed contacts around the world to do this: identifying and investigating frauds, spotting new criminal methods and trends, and highlighting other threats to trade.

International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF)

ITOPF was established in 1968 in the wake of the first major oil spill from a supertanker, the TORREY CANYON. Technical services functions for tanker owners and P&I insurers were developed during the 1970s and extended to other shipowners in 1999.

ITOPF has responded to over 800 incidents involving oil or chemical spills worldwide. Our highly skilled international team are ready to assist 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide impartial technical advice.

As a not-for-profit organisation, we have devoted efforts to developing a wide range of technical services to promote effective response in the marine environment to back up our core role of responding to ship-sourced spills. The five key services that we offer are spill response, claims analysis & damage assessment, contingency planning, training and information.

Our services are provided to our Members (tanker owners) or Associates (other shipowners) and their oil pollution insurers (normally one of the P&I Clubs), and we offer also our services at the request of governments and intergovernmental organisations such as the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds).

Our London based team of 34, 15 of whom are available to respond to spills, combined with half a century of first-hand spill response experience, is what makes us truly unique.

International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH)

On November 7th 1955, some 100 delegates from 38 ports and maritime organizations in 14 countries gathered in Los Angeles to announce the creation of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). It marked its 50th Anniversary (Golden Jubilee) in 2005.

Over the past six decades, IAPH has steadily developed into a global alliance of ports, representing today some 180 ports and some 140 port-related businesses in 90 countries. The member ports together handle well over 60% of the world’s sea-borne trade and nearly 80% of the world container traffic. It is a non-profit-making and non-governmental organization (NGO) headquartered in Tokyo, Japan

Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO)

What is SIGTTO?

Public confidence in the safe transportation and handling of liquefied gas is essential for its acceptance and growth as a major component of world energy supplies. All parties involved in these businesses share a single common interest in ensuring the technical integrity and operational security of the international transportation chain for liquefied gas.

The birth of SIGTTO

Loss of confidence in the industry in one part of the world will undermine confidence elsewhere and threatens the reputation of the industry as a whole. This, SIGTTO actively seeks to avoid. In 1978 a number of prominent companies in the field, recognising this common interest, set out to establish a framework of standards and best practice for the then emerging liquefied natural gas businesses. Realising no established industry body fully encompassed the scope of their shared interests, they resolved to create one specifically for that purpose. Hence, the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) was formed as an international organisation through which all industry participants might share experiences, address common problems and derive agreed criteria for best practices and acceptable standards.

SIGTTO in summary

Since its formation, SIGTTO has been continually promoting best practice in the liquefied gas shipping and terminal industries. Furthermore, the Society has produced a steady flow of reference material, recommendations and guidelines for industry members. This represents SIGTTO’S accumulated intellectual property, much of which has been adopted by regulatory authorities for the governance of gas shipping and terminal activities.

The International Group of P&I Clubs

The thirteen P&I Clubs which comprise the International Group (the “Group”) between them provide marine liability cover (protection and indemnity) for approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage.

Group functions

The Group has three “core” functions, firstly the operation of the claims sharing (“pooling”) arrangements and the collective reinsurance of these arrangements, secondly it operates as a forum for collecting and exchanging views between the Clubs and their shipowner members on matters relating to shipowners’ liabilities, and insurance of such liabilities, and thirdly it provides a collective industry voice for the purposes of engaging with external stakeholders including intergovernmental maritime organizations, national governments, marine authorities around the world and the shipping and marine insurance/reinsurance industries.
